Hertfordshire Ecology Surveys

As the New Year rolls in and you have started to think about progressing your project it is also the time to start thinking about any ecology surveys that might be needed.

In Hertfordshire it is likely that you will be asked to provide a bat survey or ecology survey if the works you are undertaking involve demolition, an extension or building on vacant land.

Hertfordshire is a varied county with areas on the outskirts of London to the Chiltern Hills in the north, diverse in landscape with the River lea running along the eastern boundary there is a varying habitats offering lots of opportunities for wildlife.

Increasingly wildlife is found in urban areas, most people will be aware of urban foxes (Vulpes vuples) for instance, however most will not realize that other species are reliant on human habitats. For example some bats almost completely rely on built structures, species such as pipistrelle (Pipistrellus sp.) are more often found in buildings than their historic roosts. Garden ponds provide newts, frogs and toads with a secure source of water for breeding and feeding and garden birds have learnt that people will feed them in the winter months, making survival just a little easier.

Regardless of the project you are undertaking it will be likely that an ecology or bat survey will be needed and getting these underway as soon as possible is the best way forward. Although you may not see the benefit or need the laws governing wildlife protection are there for good reason and by delaying or ignoring the need for surveys could cause you further delays and expense that was unnecessary had they been undertaken from the outset.
