Great Crested Newt surveying

Great crested newt

Great crested newt

The great crested newt ((GCN) Triturus cristatus) survey season is now well under way.
These two females were recently found on a site in Cambridgeshire. A ditch and pond is found on site.
Following an eDNA (water sampling to see if GCN are present). We started the surveys last week, first trapping session and four smooth newt (Lissotriton vulgaris) and the two females were captured and released.
Five more sessions to go before the end of June. Two of these have to be before mid-May, during the optimal season. However as Great crested newt has been confirmed the client will need to have a European Protected Species Licence (EPSL) to proceed. This is once the development planning application has been granted. This will allow the habitat to be replaced and enhanced ensuring the survival and ongoing use of the site in the future.

Reptiles as well!

In addition to the GCN surveys reptile surveys have also been undertaken and grass snake (Natrix natrix helvetica) has been found utilizing the site.
