Winter brings a slow to the ecology survey seasons with many of the stage 2 surveys not being possible to undertake, however there are some surveys which are reliant on this cooler weather.
Bats spend much of the winter, usually when weather is cooler with temperatures 4oC to 6oC and humidity of around 70 to 80% are present in suitable hibernation features. Some of these places are obvious, things like natural caves, old mines and disused railway tunnels, but some are not as obvious. These non-normal hibernation sites are simple structures like houses that are not in use, trees and old ice-houses found on estates.
Are you doing a project that involves an old building that is unheated? been told that the building has bat potential?
You only have between Dec, Jan and Feb to get these done!
